There were so many choices as to which event to capture. I decided on three images that I thought brought the experience and flavor of the Rod Run Weekend. This is one of the largest events of the year and is sponsored by the Beach Barons, a Hot Rod car club. Held in the second week of September, the Rod Run attracts thousands of car enthusiasts who come to look at more than 1,500 Rods from all over the Northwest and beyond.
Two of my Watercolors are at the Rod Run Field. The first shown here is Overexposed Grills. The second image I chose, Classic Front Ends.
One of the favorite attractions is the Ilwaco Port Slow Drag. The competition requires the driver to get a running start and then coast in neutral approximately a 10th of a mile. The winner is the rod that crosses the finish line with their rear tires remaining as close to the finish line as possible without touching it. No brakes or accelerator can be used. Needless to say some creative antics are applied to beat the competing car. About 70 cars enter this race with each getting two chances before elimination. The final painting, On Your Mark depicts this race.
