Cranberry Harvest Notecard

October - The Life and Times of the Long Beach Peninsula

October is harvest time for the cranberries scattered all up and down this 26 mile long peninsula. These bright red little berries have a peculiar characteristic; they have a light, spongy center. The harvesters fill the bogs with water, the cranberries float to the top and are raked into a boom, which conveys them to the waiting trucks. It is early, long hours and hard work, but oh how we enjoy them for Thanksgiving!

This painting, Cranberry Harvest – Pulling in the Boom captures the vivid colors and a harvester manning the boom. I so enjoyed being out during harvest in the cool, crisp air, capturing this time in the life of our peninsula.

Eric Wiegardt, a native of the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington State, is considered one of the top watercolor artists nationally. Earning a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington, he then pursued his passion, graduating from American Academy of Art in Chicago. Eric returned to the Peninsula in 1985 opening Wiegardt Studio Gallery in the Victorian home built by his oyster pioneering great grandfather.
